Clackmannan Heritage Walks – Doors Open Days

The weekend of 23rd-24th September 2017 Clackmannan will be celebrating its annual Heritage Weekend as part of this year’s Doors Open Days event which takes place across the country, where every weekend in September you can explore hundreds of fascinating buildings across Scotland for free.  

On Saturday, 24th Clackmannan Heritage Walks group are offering guided walks to explore the old county town. The group – a partnership made up Clackmannan Development Trust, Clackmannan Community Council, Scottish Autism, Clackmannan Primary School and Clackmannanshire Field Studies Society, following a successful grant award of £8,000 from The Heritage Lottery Fund from the Stories Stones and Bones programme. The group have been working hard identifying local walks and points of interest to create trails and stories that will be of interest to locals and visitors as they “look-abootye” These walks provide wonderful views, across the county from the River Forth to the Ochil Hills.   

Project leader, Ian Russell said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and are confident the project will increase the communities’ pride in our town, and we hope that this project will be an attraction for visitors both near and far to explore Clackmannan and its heritage and welcome everyone to come along and explore our great town this weekend.”  

There will be two free guided walks available where people have the choice of the Tower Walk or the Town Walk. Meeting points of the walks will be the Tolbooth, Main Street. Walks are estimated to last between 1 – 1.5 hours. Appropriate clothing and footwear is advised.  

Clackmannan Tower will also be open for visits on Sunday, 24 September as Scottish Civic Trust are celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doors Open Days. For the full programme visit www.doorsopendays.org.uk 

Clackmannan Co-op are also holding a MacMillan charity coffee morning in the Bruce Lounge of the County Bar, Main Street on the Saturday morning, so this is a good opportunity to support a good cause.  

On Sunday 24 September, the Clackmannan Heritage Walk group have arranged performances with The Walking Theatre Company of who will be taking visitors on a time travel experience with Tales of Clackmannan. Performances are FREE and will be 20 to 30 minutes long.  Bookings can be made for 1.30pm, 2.15pm, 3.15pm and 4pm. Refreshments will be available in Clackmannan Town Hall on Sunday afternoon.
